Felco

If you have ever visited any RHS, National Trust or botanic gardens and spied what sort of secateurs their gardeners use its always a Felco. Having a Felco is the easiest way to join the professionals. They are designed and manufactured in Switzerland from only the finest materials. All parts are replaceable and there is an after sales, repair and maintenance service available (for a nominal charge). Solid-forged metal alloy handles, precision-made hardened, replaceable cutting blade and an anvil blade with a sap groove. A hardened nut and bolt permit exact adjustment of both the cutting and anvil blades. A rubber cushion and shock absorber provides smooth working and soft closing of this pruner. Whew!.... Model No. 2 is the original Felco pruner, unchanged for over forty years - although much imitated the world over. Length 81/2inches, Weight 8.5 ounces.

Model No 6 at 19.5cm is a smaller, lighter weight Felco, perfect for the smaller hand, or as a second pair. It is as comfortable to use and every bit as sturdy and powerful as any other Felco pruner. Ideal for small pruning work such as grape vines, shrubs and floristry. The shorter blades facilitate closer cutting to the stem of the plant. Length 71/4 inches, Weight 7.5 ounces.

Loppers

I can personally vouch for this lopper which I have used for two years now whilst clearing coppice - it's fantastic, lightweight, (0.5kg) and stocky (420mm long). The ratchet system makes all cutting astonishingly easy.

Shears

The carbon steel blades on this lightweight shear trim untidy hedges with minimum effort: almost like cutting through butter, I just love using them. The extra long handles (0.25m overall) make reaching up to the top of a hedge most satisfying.

Telescopic Rake

This telescopic expanding rake will not last you a lifetime but you will find it invaluable (and rush to replace it as soon as you decide that its daily use has bent the tines a little too much or that a bit of rust has reduced the easy sliding handle). I use it for everything, leaves, weeds, gravel paths, scarifying the moss, in short it is almost my favourite tool, and cheap at the price. A really useful present to ask for.

Topiary Shears

You will trim your box topiary swiftly and easily with these handy shears. Grass edges can be neatened up in awkward corners and then again, this is the original tool required to shear sheep, so one way or another, how can you be without it?

What's in the garden shed?

A well stocked garden shed will make gardening a pleasure, so check out the tools that you do not yet own – they will be a perfect gift.

We really like the range of tools made by Spear & Jackson which combine the look of the old with the efficiency of new materials: stainless steel, rust resistance and the lovely hardwood wishbone handles – plus 10 year guarantee.  However if you have a different preference we will be happy to find those instead.
